Get to Know Joseph Costa, DMD, MAGD
Dr. Joseph W. Costa, Jr. earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree cum laude in a special field from the Harvard University School of Dental Medicine in 1991. He is a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry (MAGD), the highest honor bestowed by that organization. Dr. Costa is also a 1986 graduate of Boston College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry.
Dr. Costa has received extensive training at the prestigious Spear Education Center in Scottsdale, AZ, and the Dawson Academy in St. Petersburg, FL. He completed a general practice residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, from 1991 to 1992. From 2000-2004, he was the Chief of the Division of Oral Medicine and Dentistry at BWH and directed the General Practice Residency Program. As an Associate Surgeon from 1993 through 2013, he managed the care of mentally challenged dental patients in the operating room. In the past, Dr. Costa also held a teaching appointment as a Clinical Instructor in the Division of Oral Medicine, Infection and Immunity at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.
Dr. Costa is a member of the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, and the Massachusetts Dental Society (MDS). He participates in several study clubs, including the Spear Study Club and the New England Masters Study Club. Dr. Costa has been inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He has lectured and volunteered for many years at the Yankee Dental Congress in Boston.
Dr. Costa enjoys spending time with his family, including his wife, his two adult daughters, his black Labrador retriever, and his chocolate labradoodle. He loves following New England sports teams. Dr. Costa is passionate about outdoor road cycling. He also enjoys hiking, indoor cycling, weight training, rowing, and reading.
